Kids don’t open up a lot about what happens in school. So it’s a like a puzzle for me to come up with one question that tells me the most about her day at school. One of the main reasons for us to send her to school (as opposed to home schooling) is to make her a well-rounded human being who has good social skills (mainly be kind to everyone).
So I ask her this one question: Were you kind to everyone today and was everyone kind to you today? This is to make sure she treats everyone well and she is being treated well too.
This question can be different for your child (or at different stages of the child), depending on which area you would like them to improve in. For example, ‘did you learn anything new today?’ if you think that the child is not learning anything or ‘did you eat lunch today?’, if you think they are not eating well in school.
Takeaway: be ready with that one question, all you get is one shot!
What works with your child? what gets them to open up to you?
